2004 Sancerre Les Monts Damnes which smells of lime, grapefruit, honey and a hint of dill, displays a vibrant, juicy palate with underlying chalky mineral character, with nut oil richness supporting its themes of ripe citrus and subtle herbs. Luscious, honeyed citrus and quince finishing fruit is nicely complemented by chalky, saline residues in a long finish. I did not have an opportunity to collect a note from bottle on the corresponding Grande Cote, but from cask that wine was unusually lush for the vintage, dominated by citrus and honey, and possessed of a subtle hint of sweetness. Light gold. An exotic array of tropical fruits, melon, peach and smoky minerals on the nose, along with a subtle hint of anise. Full and round, with deep, musky melon and yellow plum flavors and a gentle note of wet stones. Firm acidity is buried beneath a thick layer of dense, sweet fruit. This tastes almost like a late-harvest wine and should be served alongside rich, full-flavored foods. Very impressive as well as highly distinctive Sancerre.

The other Cotat, Pascal Cotat, is cousin to the legendary François Cotat. The original family domaine was divided between them in 1998, and Pascal Cotat works many of the same vineyards, producing fine – if not quite as prized – Sancerre.
