The 2006 Thierry Allemand Cornas Chaillot is missing the elegance and detail of the ’06 Reynard and is more meaty, rich and rustic. On the nose, the wine displays plenty of ripe, licorice infused dark fruit, saddle leather and garrigue aromas. These carry over onto the full bodied palate marked by a fat, mouth filling texture as well as ripe, rustic tannins on the finish. While I didn’t taste the ’99 Chaillot on release, I struggle to think this could ever match that wine with it too is at age 10. I’d opt for drink these over the next 8 to 10 years.

(this was to have been bottled in early December) Bright ruby. Energetic redcurrant and strawberry aromas are complicated by cured meat, Asian spices and minerals. There's a pinot-like delicacy and precision to this wine that's really intriguing. Clean and brisk, with sweet red fruit flavors and a seductive floral pastille quality. Finishes with impressive cut and persistence, leaving minerals and tangy berry skin notes behind.

Allemand’s wines set the benchmark for Cornas: expressive Syrahs crafted with uncompromising traditional methods and released in tiny quantities. From the 1980s, he revived abandoned vineyards on Cornas’s steep granite slopes, building his domaine without inherited land or financial support.
