Da bere 0-0, Neal Martin, May 2021

The 1964 Grand Mayne is clearly deeper in colour than the 1959 tasted alongside. The nose is quite intense but there is some Brettanomyces that obscures the fruit and detracts from its clarity. Likewise, the palate is rustic compared to its peers: bitter with noticeable balsamic notes towards the finish that feels quite linear and misses the depth one would expect of a 1964 Right Bank. Tasted at the Grand Mayne vertical at the property. A second bottle was opened since Jean-Antoine Nony mentioned he had drunk superior examples in the past, but I feel it was not representative and defer any score.

The Nony family has been at the helm of this 17-hectare estate for three generations, since the 1930s, but it’s under Jean-Antoine – in charge since 2015 – that quality here has soared.
