Full bottle just 1,250 g. Deep gold. Toasty honey nose with considerable evolution and then strong lime notes on the palate. But this is still extremely vibrant, almost rigid! No hurry to drink the other bottle in the cellar. Should make a refreshing aperitif tonight. (One guest is German.) (JR)

More evolution on the nose than 2000 tasted alongside, curiously. Firm, stone fruits flavours and great crispness and precision. Too light to drink with food but not too sweet as a garden aperitif. (JR)
The medium to full-bodied 2001 Riesling Spatlese Niederhauser Hermannshohle is the greatest Spatlese I've ever tasted. Its liquid mineral and spice scents lead to a mind boggling personality of otherworldly richness, depth, and concentration. This massive yet intensely pure wine bastes the taster's palate with oily layers of minerals, almonds, earth, and smoky slate whose flavors are seemingly unending (unendlich, as F. X. Pichler, Austria's superstar winemaker, says). This is a prodigious, benchmark-setting effort. Projected maturity: 2008-2020+. Helmut Donnhoff approached the 2001 vintage much as Reggie Jackson would have reacted to facing a fast ball down the middle thrown by a Junior Varsity pitcher in the bottom of the ninth of the last game of the World Series. Donnhoff hit a towering, grand slam home run of majestic proportions. His 2001s are extraordinary. Importer: Terry Theise Estate Selections, imported by Michael Skurnik Wines, Inc., Syosset, NY; tel.
