Bright, deep ruby-red. Deep aromas of cassis, pepper, exotic spices and chocolatey oak. Dense and sappy, with more obviously ripe fruit to buffer the wine's currently dominant spicy oak character. Still rather backward and in need of patience. Finishes long and oaky, with dusty tannins and very good verve.

Fashioned from 100% Syrah, the 2001 Cote Rotie Les Grandes Places (aged in 100% new oak) is virile and masculine, offering a dense ruby/purple color as well as a bouquet of roasted earth, licorice, minerals, blackberries, and cassis. Tannic, medium-bodied, and chewy, it requires cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2016. The president of the syndicate of Cote Rotie growers, the young, dynamic, and talented Jean-Michel Gerin continues to build a strong following for his progressive, modern-styled, barrique-aged Cote Roties. Good bright ruby. Soil-inflected aromas of bay laurel, peat, licorice and menthol, with the roasted aspect typical of this cuvee. Sweet but juicy and firmly structured; longer than the Champin Le Seigneur and also oakier on the back end. This has lovely fruit.
