Produced from 50% Chardonnay and 50% Welschriesling, Kracher's 1998 Grande Cuvee Trockenbeerenauslese Nouvelle Vague Number 10 reveals hints of sweet oak in its otherwise jammy yellow fruit-dominated aromatics. This medium to full-bodied wine has abundant candied white grapes, and apples intermingled with poached pears in its peppery character. It is thick, spicy, oily-textured, and possesses an amazingly long, apricot-flavored finish. Anticipated maturity: Now-2030. (PR)

(for 375 ml.) The fat and soft fruit of chardonnay are here perfectly allied with the freshness and spice of welschriesling. Caramel and pungent botrytis augment aromas of honey and tropical fruits. In the mouth, this is the most dynamic of any of Kracher's '98s, with insistent fruit acid and firm expression of wood allaying its formidable thickness. Flavors of quince and apple jelly, with musky notes from the welschriesling and a chardonnay-typical caramelization of tropical fruits. Mandarin orange and brown spices join the fruit parade in a formidable finish. 2 stars.
