1986 Château Latour à Pomerol

The 1986 is more burly and tannic than usual, with an excellent deep color, full body, and a cedary, tea, and plum-like bouquet admirably backed up by new oak. Given its tannic clout and power, I would want to cellar this wine for at least 3-5 years. Anticipated maturity: Now-2002. Last tasted, 3/90.Robert Parker, Bordeaux Book, 3rd Edition # B1

Tasted at the Latour-a-Pomerol vertical in London. The 1986 Latour-a-Pomerol was the surprise package for this vertical tasting since it was not a great Right Bank vintage. Nevertheless, the nose is clean and fresh, perhaps monochromatic compared to the 1985 with dark berries, melted tar and subtle floral scents. The palate is nicely balanced. There is nothing overly ambitious here, just a touch austere and masculine maybe, although that is quibbling. This is a "serious" Pomerol at 30 years of age ,but its redeeming feature is its sheer drinkability. You can just imagine polishing off an entire bottle with ease! I would be intrigued to compare this directly with Petrus or Trotanoy ,because I would not bet against this coming out trumps. Tasted December 2015. Oct 2016, www.robertparker.com
