Medium red. Musky, reticent aromas of redcurrant, iron, tobacco and meat. Silky, broad and dry; less fruity than the Charmois and more closed today. Finishes with fine, broad tannins and herbal and peppery nuances. Hard to taste today as it shows less primary fruit character than the higher-pitched Charmois.

The 2010 Nuits St. Georges Aux Boudots comes across as weighty and substantial, especially after the Roncieres. Black cherries, plums, graphite, menthol, flowers and deep, exotic spices meld together impressively in this totally striking wine. The Boudots boasts tremendous textural depth and intensity all the way through to the round, sensual finish. At times it comes across as very Vosne-like, hardly a surprise given that Boudots lies next to Malconsorts. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2035. I was blown away by the wines I tasted with Etienne Grivot on what turned out to be one of the most thrilling visits of my fall trip. Readers should do whatever they can to latch onto a few bottles of these exquisite Burgundies. Grivot talked about a roller coaster vintage which was saved by 3-4 days of good weather. The estate lost fruit from 3,000 plants and yields were down 40% across the board because of the poor weather during the flowering. The most dramatic proof of the loss in production was seeing some of rooms in the cellar with far fewer barrels than is the norm. The domaine’s 2009s are equally exciting. Good full red. Complex nose and palate meld red fruits, minerals, flowers, mint, leather and earth. Silky and full yet weightless; utterly suave and seamless but showing little in the way of easy sweetness today. Finishes with substantial, fine-grained tannins and lovely resonating length.
