Dark red. Red fruits, spices and underbrush on the nose. Silky-sweet in the mouth, with plum and herb notes complicated by saline minerality and a riper element of chocolate. Concentrated, thick, slightly medicinal wine with impressive mouthfeel.

The 2013 Volnay Santenots is quite a bit darker and more powerful than the Lurets. Black cherries, plums, graphite and dark spices take shape in the glass, although the 2013 remains a touch compact and austere. Winemaker David Croix adds that both the berries and clusters were quite small in 2013. Veins of acidity and minerality lend an extra kick of energy to a wine that overachieves in this very challenging vintage.
The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru les Santenots has a very ripe, fresh prune and kirsch-scented bouquet that, to be honest, seems a little over the top. The palate is ripe and pure on the entry, but this feels a little disjointed at the moment, and there are muffled boysenberry jam notes that drive along the finish that needs more finesse and substance. This needs to sort itself out by the time of bottling.
