Note di degustazione
(one-third new oak): Good medium red. Inviting aromas and flavors of red fruits, brown spices, dried rose and earth. Sweet, supple and seamless but sappy acidity gives the wine excellent lift and inner-mouth floral perfume. This elegant, harmonious, lightly saline grand cru finishes long and subtle, with fine-grained tannins that dust the entire palate.

The 2012 Echezeaux Grand Cru actually has a similar nose compared to the Les Gaudichots ’12, with subtle scents of vine tomato and red cherries. The palate has a sweet entry, though I found the oak a little conspicuous when compared to the subtler aforementioned premier cru. Consequently, the finish is missing a little bluntness. Drink 2016-2024. Located in the heart of Vosne, adjacent to the original Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, lies Domaine Regis Forey. Regis’ great-grandfather by the same name founded the domaine in 1840 and the current Regis at the helm took over the 4.5 hectares of vineyard in 1987. In my experience, the wines have been traditionally made, but generally well-crafted. He also is one of the handful of producers who make a Les Gaudichots from a parcel of vines planted in 1930. These samples had been in bottle for one month. (Readers should note that a retrospective of Forey’s wines is in the pipeline.) Importer: Neal Rosenthal, New York, NY; www.madrose.com
More open today than the Gaudichots, the 2011 Echezeaux blossoms in the glass with pure texture and layers of flavor. Impeccably balanced, supple and expressive, the 2011 hits all the right notes. Dark red and black fruit, sweet spices, cloves, menthol and licorice flesh out on the inviting, resonant finish. This is a Grand Cru with plenty of near and medium-term potential.
Good bright, dark red. Musky aromas of smoky red fruits, rose petal and peony. Broader on the palate than the Gaudichots, in a fine-grained, more feminine style. Shows a distinctly saline character to the flavors of cherry and wild herbs. Then toughens up a bit on the long finish, which features substantial dusty tannins, lovely density and a light touch, along with enticing lingering floral perfume.
