This fully mature wine is still a very dark crimson. The nose has evolved into something genuinely interesting, quite complex in fact. The acid sticks out from the fruit a little but it’s a very flattering wine. (JR)

The 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon (2% Cabernet Franc is blended in) has filled out nicely since I first tasted it. Aromas of cedar, chocolate, spice box, and black currants are moderately intense. Medium to full-bodied, with good spice, in addition to excellent richness, symmetry, and harmony, this is an intense yet stylish Cabernet Sauvignon to drink now and over the next 16+ years. Tel. Red-ruby. Slightly high-toned aromas of cassis, cherry cough syrup, chocolate and mint. Juicy, firm and intensely flavored; a bit hot but not at all roasted. Tannins coat the teeth. As with so many '96 cabernets, I get an impression of somewhat uneven ripening. But this is built to age.
