Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2024-2032, Josh Raynolds, Dec 2022

Dark, glistening violet color. Highly fragrant, spice-accented red and dark berry scents, along with suggestions of smoky minerals, violet and licorice. Juicy and energetic on the palate, offering bitter cherry and black raspberry flavors that deepen and turn sweeter as the wine opens up. Shows fine delineation and spicy lift on a long, focused finish that features harmonious tannins and a lingering suggestion of cracked pepper.

One of the finest wines I’ve tasted from Chave is her 2019 Saint Joseph, a pure, medium to full-bodied, incredibly elegant Saint Joseph that does everything right. Giving up ample cassis and darker berry fruits as well as notes of violets, bacon fat, and damp stone, it has great tannins, terrific overall balance, and a great finish. It’s a brilliant bottle of wine to enjoy over the coming 10-15 years.

Deeply savory in style, the 2019 Saint Joseph—from a granite-based parcel near Tournon and aged in demi-muids—boasts notes of black olives and espresso on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is richly tannic and concentrated, turning velvety on the finish.

100% Syrah. Organic and in conversion to biodynamic. Aged in demi-muids. Cask sample. Tasted blind. A ferrous wild nose with a note of violets. A real freshness on the palate with layered tannins and both floral and animal notes. Good intensity but really driven by a streak of fresh acidity. (AC)
