Always a powerful wine, Paul Pernot’s 2023 Bâtard-Montrachet is no different. The nose is sweet and soft, with chalky minerality sitting alongside nutty notes and rich fruit. The palate is round, powerful and intense, with real viscosity and weight to the lush stone fruit – concentrated with a tight ball of citrus at its core. A big wine that will need a bit of time in the cellar to come together fully.

Like the Bourgogne Côte d'Or, this is sufficiently reduced to need decanting if you're tempted to try a bottle young. On the palate though there is good freshness to the rich, full-bodied and very generously proportioned flavors which coat the palate with dry extract, indeed the palate impression is quite seductive, all wrapped in a refreshingly dry, clean and sneaky long finish. While qualitatively equal to the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, the Bâtard is more powerful if less refined and a wine that should easily repay a decade of cellaring. Drink 2031+

The 2023 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a fresh, crushed stone- and sea cave-scented bouquet that just requires a little more intensity. The palate is balanced with a touch of spice and fine weight, though like Pernot's other 2023s, it needs more tension and terroir expression on the finish.
