Punteggio 18.5/20 · Da bere 1970-2035, Jancis Robinson MW, Apr 2024

From the John Smithes era. Pale fox red. Light, spicy nose with a hint of cinnamon. Very sweet and smooth with a fine spine. Very long with a dry (but not drying) finish and super-mellow texture. Rather pretty overall. Fairly light but with beautiful balance. (JR)

This bottle had come from Ireland where it may well have been bottled but it was in great shape. Pale tawny colour but still sweet and complex with a certain graininess. Very encouraging to see that a wine as old as the company round the table was still so vigorous – even if supposedly from a 'light' vintage. Huh. (JR)

The ‘Port Wine Trade’ (as it styled itself) called this ‘a ladies vintage’ because they initially thought it was light. It was certainly a productive year. Darker ruby and denser than the 1955 actually. Lightly spicy, smudgy, almost Chambolle-like. No tannin at all in evidence. All pleasure. Lots of round sweetness and quite exotic floral notes. This has apparently been on a plateau for many years. Dry finish after great pleasure. Much better than expected. Sweet and not that light really. Lipsmacking. A bit dry on the finish but not drying out. (JR)
