1993 Château Canon-la-Gaffelière

One of the great young wines we have tasted this year. A stupendous, silky, full-bodied red of great character and depth, deep color and tons of pure fruit. Layered with mineral, mint, blackberry and dried herb flavors. Long finish and well-integrated tannins make it tempting now, but try to wait until 2000. 6,600 cases made. – Wine Spectator 1996

This is one of the top estates of St.-Emilion. The ambitious proprietor, Comtes de Neipperg, is to be commended on the terrific job he has done at Canon-la-Gaffeliere since the mid-eighties. This 1993's saturated dark purple color is among the most impressive of the vintage. Aromatically, the wine offers copious amounts of dark, earthy, plummy, licorice, smoke-tinged, rich fruit, a sweet, surprisingly ripe, glycerin-imbued entry, and medium to full body. With low acid, and the fruit and texture concealing the wine's light tannin, this appealing, attractive effort should drink well for 10-12 years.
