A subtle, perfumed bouquet of iris, dark cherries, spices and lead pencil prefaces the 2014 Gigondas Hominis Fides, a medium to full-bodied, layered and enrobing wine with a fleshy, delicate core of fruit, fine-grained tannins and a tense, saline and delicate finish. This beauty is already at its peak and should age gracefully over the next decade.

(raised in one-third new oak barriques ) Deep ruby. Oak-inflected cherry and blackberry on the deeply perfumed, smoke-tinged nose. Broad and chewy on the palate, offering gently sweet dark fruit, vanilla and licorice flavors and a suave touch of candied flowers. Dusty tannins add grip to the youthfully tannic finish, which lingers with strong persistence.
Deep ruby. Powerful, smoke-accented aromas of dark berries and incense, complicated by suave floral pastille and woodsmoke nuances. Fleshy and deeply concentrated, showing impressive depth to the densely packed red and blue fruit flavors, which are lifted by juicy acidity. The smoky note repeats on a youthfully tannic finish that shows impressive energy, power and thrust.
Tasted blind. Cask sample. This smells of burgundy! (And, like most of these St-Cosme special cuvées, turned out to have been aged in used burgundian barrels, and made from Grenache vines planted before 1902. Malolactic fermentation in barrel after a 30-day cuvaison.) If I were tasting this on the Côte de Nuits, I suspect I’d be delighted (though might find it a tad rustic). Opulent fruit and tight, fine-grained oak tannins. Well put together. Promises well. (JR)
