Punteggio 96/100 · Da bere 2028-2055, William Kelley, Wine Advocate, Apr 2025

The 2012 Chambertin Grand Cru is deep and brooding, unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, exotic spices and orange zest, framed by a subtle touch of cassis bud reduction that's quite common in this low-yielding vintage. Full-bodied, deep and layered, it's one of the most concentrated wines in the series, with striking levels of intensity and energy and a long, palate-staining finish. This still requires some patience.

(just a single new 114-liter feuillette produced; vinified entirely with whole clusters): Bright ruby-red. Knockout nose combines dark berries, rose petal, mint, coffee and a hint of eucalyptus. A wine of incredible density, saturating the entire palate with vibrant flavors of crushed berries, flowers, mint and iodine. This is like a solid in the mouth today and will need long aging to harmonize its slightly bitter oak element.

The 2012 Chambertin is the most brooding and explosive wine in this range. Constantly changing in the glass, the 2012 flows with the essence of black/purplish fruit, mocha, cloves, cinnamon, smoke and tar, all of which come together in grand style. The Chambertin was made with 100% whole clusters, which are already beautifully integrated. In this vintage, the Chambertin stands out for its exceptional balance. Nothing is out of place. It will be quite interesting to see how things shape up over the next year, but the 2012 is already full of promise for the future.

They’ve been using a small parcel (537 sq m) of old vines since 1997 – 98 years old. 100% whole bunch. 100% new oak. The 2011 was aged in a 195-litre cask (even smaller in 2012) made specially for him each year. Smells awfully exciting and savoury. Lovely blend of richness and structure. Totally successful within his lights – very different from the casual laidbackness of Rousseau but its not overdone – just juicy, direct, attention grabbing ansd glamorous. Needs lots of time. (JR)
