Punteggio 99/100 · Da bere 2028-2075, William Kelley, Wine Advocate, Jan 2019

One of the wines of the vintage but one that will require considerable patience, the 2016 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru unfurls in the glass with a brooding bouquet of dark berries, cassis, undergrowth, peony, rich spices and espresso roast that gains in subtle savory nuance the longer it sits in the glass. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, richly structured and immensely deep at the core, with a broad-shouldered chassis of powdery tannin, searing concentration and a lifted, almost minty finish of interminable duration. More primordial and even more reserved than the Lavaux-Saint-Jacques, this will demand over a decade of bottle age, but the only Mazis-Chambertin to rival it this year is Domaine d'Auvenay's. Vinified with 90% whole cluster in a wooden cuve and matured in new barrels, it's one of the best wines I've ever tasted from Dugat-Py.

(a normal harvest here; vinified with 75% whole clusters; the Dugats work this vineyard, as well as their Chambertin, with a horse): Remarkably complex aromas of blueberry, blackberry, cocoa powder, leather and spices, plus a whiff of leesy reduction. Plush on entry, but with its outstanding sweetness perfectly countered by firm, harmonious acidity. Wonderfully juicy in the middle palate, displaying a tight, powerful kernel of lurking dark berry fruit. Really saturates the palate and vibrates on the very long, subtle, rising finish. There's an airy floral quality here that utterly seduces. This wine combines terrific structure and outstanding lift. The best of these 2016s to this point.

No frost. Tiny vendange verte. 80% whole bunch . 100% new oak. Very intense nose with masses of energy. The savour of Mazoyères with floral, hedgerow top notes. Very compelling. Broad and rich but not at all sweet. Lots of depth. Firm and massively penetrating on the palate. Magnificent. Very clean and energising. (JR)
