Bright medium-deep red. Multidimensional, slightly high-toned aromas and flavors of sappy cherry, allspice, rose petal and blood orange. Silky and creamy in an old-vine way yet almost magically penetrating too thanks to powerful minerality. This savory, dense wine saturates the mouth with perfume and the extremely long finish stains the palate with spice oils and crushed stone. Almost shockingly approachable for young Clos Saint-Denis, but this wine has the concentration, balance and structure for a long life in bottle.

(100% vendange entier ; 100% new oak): Good full medium red. Vibrant aromas of red fruits, dried rose, minerals and sweet oak. Wonderfully sweet but with stony minerality giving the mid-palate a light touch. Offers an uncanny blend of strength and elegance; tangy and penetrating. Really classic young Clos Saint-Denis with outstanding precision and verve. The floral, rising finish features very fine-grained tannins and mouth-staining persistence.

The 2010 Clos Saint Denis comes across as seamless and impeccable from start to finish. It is an effortless, graceful wine that defines the essence of what makes Grand Cru Burgundy Grand Cru. It literally hovers on the palate with impeccable class and personality. The Clos Saint Denis was made with 100% whole clusters, which comes through in the wine’s personality, especially on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2025-2045. I tasted an amazing range of 2010 reds at Jadot with long-term winemaker Jacques Lardiere and his successor Frederic Barnier. In order to make this large section of the report easier to read, I have broken up the wines into the Cote de Beaune and Cote de Nuits. Lardiere and Barnier told me they were quite worried about the prospects for the harvest upon their return from summer vacations in August, but the year was saved by a perfect September. Yields are down 25-50% because of the frost and cold weather earlier in the year, but overall quality is very high. Lardiere and Barnier also noted that early on it appeared that there would be a wide gap in quality between the Cote de Beaune and the Cote de Nuits, but over time that gap narrowed to some extent. Still, there is little question the vintage was more challenging in the Cote de Beaune because of a rainier summer and overall higher precipitation throughout the year.
