Punteggio 91/100 · Da bere 2023-2033, Neal Martin, Jan 2022

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Champonnet 1er Cru has a tightly wound, well-defined bouquet of red plum and cranberry scents. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine depth and acidity. Not amazingly complex, but fresh and "classic" in style. A light pepperiness surfaces toward the finish. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Champonnets 1er Cru was showing a touch of reduction on the nose out of barrel, although there are pleasant red plum and bergamot scents tucked underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannin and good depth, quite stocky for a Gevrey-Chambertin, and a dash of black pepper appears on the finish. Fine.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnet is an attractive wine from a site defined by the cooling influence of the Combe Lavaux. Offering up aromas of sweet wild berries, dried flowers, licorice, caramelized orange rind and rich soil tones, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and layered, with good concentration and a fleshy core of sappy fruit that cloaks its fine tannins, concluding with a pure, mineral finish.
