Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2026-2038, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2015

Deep, bright ruby-red. Boysenberry and blackberry aromas show an almost confectionery quality. At once thick and lively on the attack, then harmonious and round in the middle, with intense dark berry flavors accompanied by strong torrefaction notes of licorice, smoke and bitter chocolate. Finishes very long but tight, with tannins a bit less refined than those of the 2013 version. Like the Petite Chapelle, there's little in the way of easy sweetness here but this very young wine should gain in complexity and pliancy with extended bottle age.

(one-third vendange entier): Bright red-ruby. Expressive aromas of blackberry, licorice, coffee, mocha, flowers and game. Supple and lightly saline, in a distinctly gentle style, with well-integrated acidity and a lovely touch of sweetness. This has real grand cru grain! Powerful for such a charming wine, finishing with attractive smoky minerality. This cuvee has included one-third Mazoyeres-Chambertin since 1996.

Another dark, mysterious wine, the 2012 Charmes-Chambertin is laced with dark red plum, smoke, incense and savory/floral notes. The flavors are rich, round and layered, adding to a sense of simply impeccable balance and pure texture.

Has been one-third Mayozères since 1996. 40% whole bunch – less than some to keep the charming aspect. 100% new oak. Rich and glossy and sweet yet with some freshness. Racy and lacy. Pretty approachable for a grand cru. Exuberant. Appetising. Long. (JR)
