The 2019 Volnay Les Angles 1er Cru has another high-toned, precocious bouquet with macerated small red cherries, sloes, leather and Bretty scents. With aeration, the delineation actually improves, and it seems to gain more freshness as a result. The palate is medium-bodied and slightly lactic in style, with pliant tannins and lower acidity, but it retains just about enough freshness. The oak feels very pronounced and wants to shout over the terroir on the finish, which detracts from its overall complexity. Additionally, there’s a beetroot aftertaste that jars with a cloying sweetness. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Angles is sensual and charming, bursting from the glass with aromas of plums, raw cocoa, sweet spices and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and concentrated, it's lively and textural, with a broad attack and a long, expansive finish.
The 2019 Volnay Les Angles 1er Cru comprises seven barrels this year, of which one is new. It has a comparatively simple nose compared to Boillot’s other Volnay Premier Crus, displaying light blackberry and briary aromas. The palate is balanced with gentle tannins, quite supple and light, which augurs an early-drinking Volnay to enjoy over the next five or six years.
