Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2021-2032, Neal Martin, Feb 2022

The 1993 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru has a loose-knit nose with ample red fruit, leather, earth and fern, though it does not quite deliver the Pinoté of Lignier's finest vintages. The palate is very well balanced with crushed strawberry and raspberry, fine acidity and conveying a touch of the austerity that the 1993s can sometimes project. Yet, it is very long and there is a touch more flesh on the finish. Excellent.

The 1993 Clos de la Roche is one of the wines in this tasting that speaks to balance above all else. Silky, nuanced and understated, the 1993 is an absolutely joy to taste today, as all the elements fall into place effortlessly. Nothing in particular stands out and yet the wine is a pure joy to taste. The 1993 is a decidedly lithe, feminine Clos de la Roche, but it has a bit more depth than other similarly styled vintages, the 2000 in particular. Silky tannins, chalky, saline notes and a touch of sous bois frame the persistent finish.

This has tightened up considerably over the last few years but it remains stylish, classy and pure. A truly superb wine with everything it needs to age for decades and still has plenty of sap, tannin and power. Complete in every respect and one of the great wines of the vintage. Multiple and consistent notes.

Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2004-2010, Pierre Rovani, Oct 2000

The 1993 Clos de la Roche is medium-to-dark ruby-colored with hints of amber on the edge of the glass. Its initially kinky, slightly barnyard-like aromas blew off quickly to display loads of spicy cedar scents. Medium-to-full-bodied, this earth, stone, black fruit-laden wine is well-concentrated and dense. It possesses its vintage's firm, dry, tannic backbone but has the potential to have the depth of fruit to overcome this trait with age. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2010+.
