Very good dark red. Sexy, complex nose opens dramatically with aeration to offer scents of small crushed berries, kirsch , smoked meat, iron, licorice, mocha and menthol. The kirsch element carries through onto the wonderfully dense, plush yet brisk palate, where a note of prune is leavened by excellent acidity. This very concentrated wine is more juicy than opulent. The slowly building whiplash of a finish features a repeating note of menthol and a firm dusting of tannins that still call for patience, leaving the salivary glands quivering. Incidentally, Pierre-Jean Roty told me that he was also doing a stage at Domaine Hubert Lignier in 2002, in addition to working with his father and brother at the family estate. (14.25% alcohol; 3.29 pH; 39 h/h)

Full dark red with no amber. Knockout nose combines raspberry, olive tapenade, dried flowers, baked bread and truffley underbrush, showing surprising energy and lift. Combines outstanding complexity with Chambertin-like finesse of texture and superb volume without any heaviness. Sweet, sexy black raspberry and underbrush flavors carry impressively on the back end, with powerful ripe tannins spreading out to saturate the palate. There's no hurry to drink this beauty.

The third flight was very interesting, as it generated quite a bit of discussion. People either loved or hated the 2002 Roty Charmes-Chambertin Très Vieilles Vignes. A gamey, animalistic note gave the Roty considerable wildness, a quality that some tasters appreciated more than others. I very much liked the wine's decisive personality.

Dee p ruby-red. Knockout nose combines dark berries, rose petal, iron, flint, leather, smoke and minerals. Dense, broad and deep, with an almost confectionery sweetness. Wonderfully ripe and concentrated yet light on its feet, with superb definition of flavor. Extremely long and soil-inflected, with the wine's substantial but noble tannins thoroughly buffered by echoing fruit. Another great vintage for this wine, which is frequently Chambertin-like in a way that too few Chambertins are. I'd lay this down for a good decade.
