The 2016 Le Marquis de Calon Ségur has a very blackcurrant-driven nose, with just a touch of dark chocolate and red roses, but it is missing the complexity of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with quite thick and bold tannins. Grippy, slightly granular in texture, with a touch of white pepper and clove towards the finish. It does seem to meld together in the glass. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

The second wine of Château Calon-Ségur, the 2016 Marquis de Calon is a medium-bodied, soft, hard to resist effort that has plenty of sweet red and black fruits, some dried herb and spicy aromatics, moderate tannins, and a great finish. It shows the balance and purity of the vintage and is an outstanding Saint-Estephe to drink over the coming 10-15 years. This cuvée is a blend of 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, brought up in 30% new oak.
The 2016 Le Marquis de Calon Ségur is a blend of 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon matured in 30% new oak, bottled in June 2018. It has a delightful bouquet of blackberry, boysenberry and tobacco aromas; hints of dark chocolate emerge with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a lively, energetic opening. This is well balanced and nicely poised, displaying a fine bead of acidity, and it feels long in the mouth. A deeply impressive second wine from Calon-Ségur that should give a decade of drinking pleasure.
