Masses of black cherry and plum combine with hints of mocha and Christmas spices as the dramatic 2006 Brunello di Montalcino explodes from the glass. Supple and pliant, it envelops the palate with weighty, near velvety textures offset by a core of tart wild berry fruit and mineral tones. Still structured and incredibly long, it leaves the senses saturated with balsamic inflections and a salty sensation that provides a sultry character. Despite losing a bit of its color around the rim, the 2006 is in fine form, a bit brooding but balanced to the core.

Bright dark red. Slightly roasted aromas of musky herbs, black olive and menthol. Very ripe and sweet but a bit dull and undifferentiated; just this side of stewy. Undeniably rich but I find it ponderous. Finishes with big, tongue-drying tannins. I tasted two similar bottles of this wine, which is not up to the level of past vintages here.
Very deep, almost crimson centre and much more evolved orange-tinged rim. Sweet and developed, dried-fruit nose. Vegetal notes too. Fruitcake palate with lots of acidity and drying tannin seems to indicate a limited lifespan – at least for the fruit. (WS)
