The 2019 Chardonnay EGW, which I last tasted in December of 2021, is transparent, pure and singular, its wafts of allspice and matchstick complemented by tones of grilled peaches, spring honey, pie crust and lemongrass. The medium-bodied palate is quietly intense, with concentrated, exotic fruit. It has focused acidity, a satiny texture and a very long, ethereal finish with fantastic perfume.

The aromatics of the 2019 Chardonnay EGW are lifted with a hint of smoky reduction and offer notes of lemon verbena and orchard fruits. The palate is vibrant with fresh pear, green apple, and white flowers. The wine is open and inviting, with mineral earth, and its clean and polished perfume lasts long after the finish. It delivers a great balance between opulence and tension, making for a truly compelling wine. Drink 2024-2036. 00 Wines, founded by husband-and-wife duo Katherine and Christopher Hermann, exclusively produce Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. They derived the name “00” from numerology and say it represents true and absolute potential. Their first vintage was in 2015, and in 2017 they moved to a shared winemaking facility that they operate out of today. Katherine takes charge of the creative direction with packaging and communications. Her background in marketing brought her to New York City and Boulder, Colorado, working for technology startups, before arriving in the Willamette Valley. Prior to establishing 00 Wines, Christopher was a legal advisor for nearly 40 years for many of the top names in the wine and spirits industry, practicing environmental law. They are inspired by the great wines of Burgundy and implement many of Burgundian techniques, advised by their consultant Pierre Millemann and their winemaker Wynne Peterson-Nerdry. I cannot speak to their reds at this point, but they are certainly making some of the most compelling white wines in the Willamette Valley today.
A blend of Wente and Dijon clones. The Dijon clones are from Seven Springs south block. The Wente clone is from Chehalem Mountain vineyard. Aged 12 months in 20% new French oak (Damy, light long toast) with deep lees, no bâttonage, and full malolactic conversion. 2019 was rather wet during harvest but for flexible and dexterous winemakers like Wynne Peterson-Nedry the wines came out beautifully balanced with more subtlety than the richer 2018s. There's still a consistency of ripe and bright fruit but more white-blossom florality here. Well-integrated but very present oak and a longer finish than the 2018. (SCJ)
