The 2016 Volnay Les Chevrets 1er Cru currently shows a lot of reduction on the nose that occludes the appellation profile. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, but it comes across as more winemaking than wine, with a simple finish that is pleasurable, but lacks the intellectual heft one should find in a Premier Cru. Drink over the next 15 years or so. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting in Burgundy.

Distinctive aromas of coffee grounds on the nose, from heavy oak influence. Aromatic smoky quality to the palate and a long, fragrant persistence on the finish. Less fruit power to match the oak than their Frémiets, it seems. (RH)
(from four parcels of vines between 40 and 60 years of age; fruit in the lower section of the vineyard was wiped out by the frost): Healthy medium red. Slightly reduced nose conveys and medicinal dark raspberry aroma. Then fine-grained and graceful in the mouth, conveying an impression of delicacy to the flavors of raspberry, currant and flowers. Finishes quite suave and long, with very refined tannins. The Boillots made just 10 barrels in place of a normal 30, 3 of them new.
