The 2017 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru feels a bit volatile on the nose, displaying touches of pear and lemongrass but missing a little cohesion and freshness. The palate has good weight and a waxy texture, but it lacks tension and mineralité , and the finish is monotone compared to its peers. This was a curious showing and I will defer any score until I can reexamine it. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.

Revisited from bottle, the 2017 Meursault 1er Cru Perrières confirms its status as one of the wines of the vintage, unwinding in the glass with aromas of citrus oil, white flowers, crushed chalk and fresh pastry that only hint of the complexity to come. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, with an exquisitely satiny attack, a deep and multidimensional core and considerable concentration underpinned by incisive acids. Concluding with a long, penetrating and searingly chalky finish, this Perrières is a brilliant achievement.

Tank sample. Stony/chalky on the nose, much less opulent on the nose then the Clos des Bouchères. Flinty and smoky. On the palate, an acid tension, almost a sour-spicy grapefruit, and a steely core with lovely alignment. Goes on for ever. Utterly precise and tightly structured but no lack of fruit. Perfect balance. (JH)
