The 2005 vintage is remembered as a warm one, but in truth, it saw a very cold and snowy winter with brief, but intense, heat spikes during the hottest months of summer. In conclusion, 2005 was a vintage of extremes (a trend due to climate change that continues in more frequent intervals as we move forward in time). The resulting 2005 Flaccianello della Pieve is solid and sturdy as a result, with a tight bouquet characterized by dark plum, dried blackberry, smoke, tar, licorice and crushed granite. In truth, the aromas are slow to open at first, and when they finally do, they appear in quickly contained pulses. This gives the wine an air of seductive mystery or of the unexpected. The mouthfeel is rich and generous followed by a tight tannic backbone.

A wine of superb finesse, the 2005 Flaccianello is magnificent today. Silky, perfumed and gracious on the palate, the Flaccianello has matured into a striking, silky wine. Scents of lavender, mint, sage and sweet tobacco add nuance as the wine continues to open up. The 2005 is not a huge Flaccianello, rather it is a wine that speaks to understatement within the context of the year. This is the best showing yet from the 2005, a wine that has continued to grow since it was first released.
The 2005 Flaccianello della Pieve is impressive. It boasts striking inner perfume and sweetness to match its considerable sexiness. Today the wine is firing on all cylinders. The 2005 can be enjoyed today, but also has more than enough structure and acidity to develop nicely for a number of years. Floral notes add lift and brightness on the feminine finish. This sexy Flaccianello is a great effort in a vintage that was not without its challenges.
Cherry – quite brooding. Very bold structure, slight violet and vanilla scent. Very young and tense, like a clenched fist. (RH)
