Medium red. High-toned, inviting aromas and flavors of plum, dried flowers, menthol, mocha, spices and earth. Very rich, smooth and horizontal, offering compelling mid-palate sweetness and excellent depth. Finishes with big, dusty tannins and a light touch and superb balance for the vintage. One senses more to come here: this will go truffley with bottle age.

More brick than ruby. Very ripe cherry fruit and yet still with a delicate floral layer. As firm as the Cerequio but seems finer grained, more refined in structure. Fresher on the finish too. Immense length and density. (JH)

The 2009 Barolo Rocche dell’Annunziata Torriglione is a slightly more obvious wine, with bold structure and opulent fruit layering. Sweet fruit flavors of cassis and dried cherry are backed by savory tones of leather and cigar box. Sweet tannins render a more immediately approachable wine. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025. The wines of Roberto and Davide Voerzio offer a fitting conclusion to this tasting of Piedmont’s best red wines. These are stunning wines that capture, head on, the beauty of the 2009 vintage. They remind us of the dazzling heights achieved by the Nebbiolo grape. Importer: Winebow, Pinebrook, NJ; tel. (201) 445-0620

The 2009 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata/Torriglione explodes from the glass with freshly cut flowers, spices, mint and sweet red berries, all hallmarks of this great site. In 2009 the Rocche is pure sensuality and grace. Layers of fruit continue to build to the silky, totally expressive finish. There is so much to like here in this deceptively medium bodied, utterly impeccable Barolo.
