The classic 2012 Châteauneuf-du-Pape checks in as a blend of 70% Grenache and 15% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre, brought up mostly in foudre. It’s a year in, year out no brainer purchase and offers loads of charm and character in 2012. Garrigue, sweet black fruits, peppery herbs, and licorice notes all emerge from this medium to full-bodied, seamless, elegant 2012 ideal for drinking over the coming decade or so.

Sweet fruit, full body but the finish is rather lacking and light by comparison. Milk chocolate flavour for a little bit of complexity. (RH)
Brilliant ruby-red. Highly perfumed aromas of fresh red berries, potpourri and Asian spices, with a smoky mineral note adding urgency. Sappy, sweet and seamless, offering intense raspberry and floral pastille flavors and a touch of star anise. Spreads out nicely on the gently tannic finish, which clings with excellent tenacity and repeating floral character. An outstanding effort for a "basic" Châteauneuf and extremely easy to drink right now, but there's no hurry to do so.
The 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape (70% Grenache and 15% each of Syrah and Mourvedre) is beautiful, with medium to full-bodied richness, lots of sweet black raspberry fruit, graphite, bouquet garni and licorice aromatics, and sweet, building tannin that comes through on the finish. It shows the purity and balance of the vintage, and will dish out loads of pleasure over the coming decade or more.
