We heard some rude things said about Pavie Macquin but we found it to be very brightand lively with a nose of damsons and red fruit, toasty charcoal and nice fine tannin and a lovely crunchy quality to the fruit. Very good.

The 2011 Pavie-Macquin has a powerful nose with mulberry and red cherries, camphor and fennel emerging with time. Lacks finesse, but it is not unattractive. The palate is high-toned with sweet red cherry, cough candy and orange zest. Good substance on the finish, modern in style but well crafted. Tasted blind at the annual 10-Year-On tasting.
Soy, smoked earth, oyster shell and raspberry fruits all flood the mouth on the opening beats, with touches of fig and white flowers. A good moment to start drinking this, as it is a little less succulent than some others in the lineup, reserved after an extremely dry but not overly hot year. As it opens, you see hidden concentration and pools of stillness. Part of the classic vintages series within this vertical.
Tasted blind. Dense crimson. Ruby rim. Definite oxidation. Soft and sweet and rosy. Then acid and rather dry tannin on the end. Unbalanced. Harsh finish. (JR)

On the hill of Pavie, this property’s 15 hectares of vines neighbour those of Troplong Mondot and Pavie. Under Stéphane Derenoncourt and Nicolas Thienpont, the property was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé B status in 2006.
