The 2017 Riesling Idig VDP.Grosse Lage has improved enormously in the last five years. The wine opens with a dense, complex nose with citric and iodine notes; it's deep, elegant and complex, wonderfully open and completely at home. Round and juicy on the palate, it's stimulatingly salty and salivating, pleasantly chalky, with fine tannins and a tart finish that is enveloped in rich extract. It's a long-lasting classic that is already fun to drink. Only two grams per liter of residual sugar. Tasted at the Rebholz Kastanienbusch/Christmann Idig/Wittmann Morstein vertical tasting in Westhofen in late August 2024.

Lemon, lime, white peach and coriander seed on the nose anticipate the luscious as well as pungent and zesty impression subsequently conveyed on the silken palate. Bittersweet inner-mouth perfume of iris and thyme adds allure; peach pit and hazelnut provide piquant counterpoint; and a combination of oily, alkaline and chalky notes lends intrigue, leading to a prodigious finish that projects impressive energy and a dynamic interplay of fruity, floral and mineral elements. The label here reads “13% alcohol,” but there is no sense of weightiness, let alone harshness or heat.
Fruit rises from the glass to impress the olfactory perception, but the fresh fragrance of garden herbs takes over on the second sniff. A generous texture and juicy flavour steer towards opulence. Reined in by a cool stony minerality. (MS)
