Punteggio 91/100 · Antonio Galloni, Vinous, May 2017

The natural intensity of the 2007 vintage comes through in Arietta's Red Wine Variation One. Deep, rich and full-bodied, the 2007 is mature, or close to it, and yet its balance is quite appealing. Worn-in leather, tobacco, espresso, scorched earth, menthol and dark spices all flesh out in the glass. Although the 2007 lacks some freshness, it has enough depth to hang on for at least a few more years. (AG)

(55% syrah and 45% merlot) Deep medium ruby. Wild aromas of black raspberry, blueberry and brown spices complemented by smoked meat. Plump and sweet if a bit youthfully subdued today. This boasts a dense, palate-saturating texture and sound supporting acidity, not to mention a firm tannic spine. The wildness carries through in the mouth, but this very promising wine seems in the process of shutting down. Forget it for four or five years.

A blend of 55% Syrah and 45% Merlot, the 2007 Variation One reveals smoky bacon notes intermixed with notions of boysenberries, wild flowers, forest floor, pepper, and wood spice. Drink this medium to full-bodied, supple red over the next 6-7 years. Andy Erickson makes these wines for the well-known auctioneer, classical pianist, and wine personality Fritz Hatton. Tel. (a 60/40 blend of syrah and merlot) Wild but reticent aromas of musky roast coffee and espresso; less meaty than the 2006. Lush and fine-grained, with surprising energy and acidity to the black raspberry flavor. A more brooding style than the 2006, but finishes with suave tannins.
