Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Echézeaux Grand Cru was a little sullen at first, more black fruit developing with aeration, yet remaining straight-laced and tertiary in style, tobacco notes emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin. This is a bit coarse and feels austere, does not really "flow" towards the finish that cuts away early. It is a wine that needs to look at itself in the mirror and ask how it could improve because I do quite admire its style. Tasted September 2016.

Succulent fruit, but very little grandeur or complexity. In fact, the finish is bitter and the tannins are rather rough. (RH)
