The 2001 Georges de Latour Private Reserve is quite dark and brooding in its demeanor. Black cherry, gravel, spice, menthol, licorice and chocolate flesh out in tis dark, deep wine. I imagine the 2001 will always remain a tannic, rustic wine. Leather, cedar, menthol, chocolate, leather and licorice power though. My impression is that the aromatics will mature faster than the tannins soften, a sign the balance here is not quite optimal.

Bright medium ruby-red. Knockout Pauillac-like aromas of cassis, black cherry, graphite and menthol. Plush and generous but kept firm by its strong mineral core. This energetic beauty offers pristine, delineated flavors of black fruits and saline minerality. While it's still remarkably youthful and has the structure for a long life in bottle, its broad, refined tannins give it great drinkability today. Finishes sweet and very long. The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve Georges de Latour was made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged for 22 months in oak barrels, 76% new, 57% French and 43% American. Medium to deep garnet-brick in color, the nose slowly unfurls to reveal baked blackcurrants, stewed plums and dried mulberries with touches of dried leaves, pencil lead, cigar box and beef drippings. Medium-bodied with an alcohol of 13.6% and a pH of 3.9 (suggesting relatively low acidity), the tannins are ripe, firm and velvety textured, framing tons of black fruit preserves flavors and savory nuances, finishing on a lingering menthol note. Still packing plenty of fruit, this is drinking beautifully now, but there is no rush to drink. 9,500 cases with produced.
