Note di degustazione
From averagIng 45-year-old vines facing south on a 90% steep slope on volcanic rocks and harvested in early October, the golden-amber colored 2007 Riesling Clos Saint-Urbain Rangen de Thann yielded 36 hectoliters per hectare and opens with a quite matured but clear, elegant and refined nose with pancake and apricot aromas. On the palate, this is a dense, tight, dry, almost astringent, very saline and seriously tannic Rangen with lingering salinity and good power. "The small golden clusters were perfectly healthy and achieved excellent ripeness," reported Olivier Humbrecht. The 2007 fermented very slowly ("almost one year") and was bottled in February 2009 with 13.5% alcohol and just two grams per liter of residual sugar. Tasted as part of the large Rangen vertical in Wachenheim, Pfalz, in November 2023.

The first 2007 after a series of 2008s apparently. Light nose and not much concentration. Bone dry and a bit severe. The sort of trocken that could do with more fruit. (JR)
Olivier brought this wine to illustrate his current winemaking philosophy of trying to imbue each wine with as much specific terroir character as possible. From a 45 degree slope at 35 to 45 m picked in late October. 2007 was an easy vintage with an early flowering and dry from late August to late October. Deep gold. Amazingly rich and 'wild' on the nose. It tastes bone dry even though there is a residual sugar level of 35 g/l. Intense with masses of extract. Very exciting wine indeed that has not yet reached its full potential but is already a pleasure to drink. (JR)
2 g/l RS, 26 hl/ha. Acrid bonfire smoke, apple, pear juice, slate, concentrated and brightly acidic with a bitter spritz at the end. (RH)
