Cask sample. This shows a little more oak spice on the nose than the Charmes. Just a light note of smoky struck match, quite unusual in this vintage. Tight, sour-fresh and long, really long and precise. Very good. (JH)

The 2016 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru les Clavoillons is reserved and rather aloof on the nose, although that is how we like our Puligny (don’t we?). There are some lovely touches of white peach and yellow flowers here. The palate is marked by a sour lemon note on the entry that complements the energy and concentration conveyed by this Clavoillons. This feels very harmonious with veins of stem ginger and white pepper creating a complex and quite compelling finish and represents one of the best wines from Alain Chavy this vintage.
