Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2010-2015, David Schildknecht, Wine Advocate, Apr 2010

The Trimbach 2006 Riesling Cuvee Frederic Emile displays almost cinnamon-like as well as gingery sweet spicy pungency, a legacy of advanced ripeness and a touch of botrytis. Ripe strawberry, blood orange, and pink grapefruit add to the rather decadent allure here, following on an opulent palate, whose subtly oiliness of texture and honeyed cast give further testimony to noble rot. Yet for all of its far-gone, exotic ripeness, there is persistent refreshment here and a sense of lift rather than weight. A strikingly long, succulent finish is touched with quinine and citrus rind bitterness. (The alcohol here is only a bit over 13% in alcohol, incidentally.) After the release later this year I would start enjoying this unforgettable if far from classic Frederic Emile, and while it might well surprise me and hold up well for longer than another 3-5 years after that, I would advise it me monitored closely ,while waiting on the more classic and in time more impressive 2005. ”The yeasts were very efficient in 2007,” notes Jean Trimbach, pointing to a collection of wines several of which are below one gram in residual sugar. The grapes and people did good work, too: I cannot recall a collection at this address that was more consistently fine. Only three special bottlings were essayed by Trimbach in 2006, all Riesling, of which the Frederic Emile and Clos Ste. Hune are among the high points of this vintage in Alsace. Riesling was the most successful grape in this difficult vintage. First weekend of Oct: rain and heat. A little angular on the nose. Very dry, a little too dry at the moment? Fine and classic and frightfully austere at the moment. Quite chewy. > (JR)

Pale, bright yellow. Crystallized lemon peel, fresh herbs and a whiff of exotic fruits (from botrytis?) on the nose. Densely packed but juicy rather than glyceral, with a slightly raw character to its citrus and mineral flavors. Neither fat nor particularly classic, this seems caught in no man's land. The edgy finish reveals notes of apricot fruit and skin. I'm not wild for this today, but then it will not be released for a good two years.
