Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2013-2018, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Aug 2007

The 1998 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is stylistically closer to the 1997 than to the 1996. It reveals an attractive core of ripe fruit and a soft-textured, open personality with outstanding persistence and a long, fresh finish. Like many wines of the vintage it is somewhat slender, and my impression is that it won't be one of the longer-lived San Giuseppes. It is best enjoyed on its own, as it does suffer somewhat by being placed next to this group of mostly stronger vintages.

Rich dark ruby. Huge, penetrating, and complex nose redolent of wet earth, spices, menthol and tar. The palate is massive and packed with rich dark stewed fruit and mineral flavors, finishing with superb length. This is a Barolo of great proportion that is delicate and masculine at the same time. With some air, this is drinking well right now, although additional bottle age will only add complexity.

The 1998 Barolo Riserva San Giuseppe, with a significantly lighter color than the Bricco Boschis, is more mature on the nose, concentrated but drier on the palate yet less sweet and ample in its flavors and texture. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2015. A Marc de Grazia Selection, various American importers, including Michael Skurnik, Syosset, NY; tel. (516) 677-9300, Vin Divino, Chicago, IL; tel. Cavallotto's monopole vineyard, the famed Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe, produces a singularly-styled Barolo with incredible fruit, a layered texture, moderately high tannin, and an enormous follow through on the palate. It brilliantly marries finesse/elegance with unbridled power and concentration. Although it requires 3-4 years of cellaring to drop some tannin and develop more fully, it should be a spectacular 1998. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2020.
