Grosset Riesling needs little introduction for New World Riesling aficionados. Working at the southern tip of the Clare Valley – Australia’s world-class region for this variety – Jeffrey Grosset has almost single-handedly been responsible for the renaissance of Clare Valley Riesling over the last thirty years. Produced from a single vineyard with thin, hard, slate soils, the vines struggle to root downwards, producing small, concentrated berries with power. The resulting wine is steely and focused, with an intensity that truly defines the distinctive character of Clare Valley Rieslings. Grosset’s style, with his emphasis on purity of fruit via organic, uncomplicated winemaking, results in wines with a distinctive character that captures the individuality of each vineyard. Grosset’s wines are, in our and many other people’s opinion, an absolute bargain. Halliday notes “Jeffrey Grosset is unchallenged as Australia’s greatest maker of Riesling” and states that ”..on a world scale, his wines are significantly under priced”

One of Australia's iconic Rieslings, the 2017 Polish Hill Riesling looks to be another terrific success. Youthful notes of petrichor and crushed stones surround a core of lemon and lime on the nose, while the medium-bodied palate is an impenetrably tight skein of wiry citrus flavors. Now and again, a glimpse of green apple or underripe peach pokes out, just to be reeled in and put in place by lime tendrils, which form almost endless curls on the finish.

More restrained and stony on the nose than the Springvale with a lightly chalky aroma entwined with the delicate citrus. On the palate, tightly wound, bone dry, super-crisp and mouth-watering and with wonderful precision. The lemon fruit is more evident on the aftertaste than on the mid palate, but the overall impression is a wine that needs time to develop complexity even though the balance is perfect now. Very long, with a stony grip on the finish. (JH)

This is a ravishing riesling of the highest order, X-factor multiplied. Throw up any part (flesh, juice, skin, pith) of lime or lemons of any kind, add ethereal acidity and marvel at the elegance and length of the palate. Jeffrey Grosset is the undisputed king of the Clare Valley.
