The 2022 Pinot Noir Wendling Vineyard Block E is a deep red color and is packed with kirschy fruit notes. It has sappy richness and a broad, occidental feel, and it’s long and warming on the palate. The year 2025 marks the 30th anniversary for Littorai. Heidi and Ted Lemon operate Littorai from their Gold Ridge Estate in Sebastapol, where they produce Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from exceptional cool-climate vineyard sites on the Sonoma Coast and in Anderson Valley. Ted is, hands down, one of Sonoma's most important farmers and winemakers today. Though they farm biodynamically, they prefer to describe their practices in the vineyards as “generative farming,” a term intended to include the human relationship to the stewardship and shaping of the land as part of modern nature and integrated farming. In the winery, all the wines undergo spontaneous fermentations, with the reds going through two to three weeks of fermentation, and although Ted is not dogmatic in his approach, each of the wines is raised similarly. All of the wines for this report were tasted at the estate.

The 2022 Pinot Noir Wendling Vineyard Block E unfolds dramatically with air, transitioning from red and black cherry to detailed wafts of licorice, tea leaves, hibiscus and orange peel. The medium-bodied palate is pure and layered, unfolding additional nuances as it flows through the mouth. It’s framed by barely there, dusty tannins and bright acidity, and it has a long, perfumed finish. It will benefit from time in the cellar. 590 cases were made.
The 2022 Pinot Noir Wendling Vineyard Block E is crazy, wild and captivating. All the elements are so well balanced. Soaring aromatics meld into red/purplish fruit, blood orange, cinnamon, mint and dried flowers. Deep and layered yet light on its feet, the 2022 is a magical, sensual wine that captures all the hedonistic and intellectual senses. More importantly, the Wendling shows what is possible in Anderson Valley.
