Punteggio 96/100 · Da bere 2024-2050, Neal Martin, Nov 2018

The 2015 Grands-Echézeaux Grand Cru seems to be entering an awkward stage. There is sufficient brambly red fruit on the nose and some stem addition underneath, although these components have not yet fully knitted together. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, and here there is a much greater sense of harmony. The acidity is very well judged, exerting pleasing grip toward the structured finish. This a wine where your initial reservations dissipate as the quality becomes apparent, though it will require several years in bottle. Chapeau , winemaker Michel Mallard! Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Tasted blind, the 2015 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru showed extraordinarily well, far surpassing my expectations and proving that interesting things are finally afoot at this domaine. Unfurling in the glass with a classy bouquet of ripe wild berries, rose petals, incense, candied peel and espresso roast, the wine is full-bodied, ample and lavish, with satiny tannins, a fleshy but succulent core of fruit, juicy balancing acids and the ineffable sense of completeness that distinguishes the vintage's best wines. While this address's debut efforts were somewhat uninspiring, this superb Grands Echézeaux is the real thing. Has Domaine d'Eugenie finally arrived?

(18 hectoliters per hectare produced): Good full, dark red. Brooding aromas of blueberry, cassis and violet. Finer-grained but more backward than the Echézeaux, showing less early sweetness to its dark berry, black cherry and anise flavors. This sharply focused, youthfully tight wine is unusual powerful for this cuvée . Finishes salty and very long, with a serious spine of ripe tannins. The Echézeaux may be easier to understand today, but this wine boasts sensational promise.
