A few words on the packaging: Nativ uses an extra heavy glass bottle that is a far step removed from sustainability. It's worth mentioning, that is, if these things are important to you. However, I can't help but notice the recyclable synthetic cork that seems oxymoronic. The Nativ 2017 Irpinia Aglianico Blu Onice opens to dark fruit and sweet spice. The bouquet shows dried blueberry and prune with sweet cinnamon and nutmeg. At the end, it becomes difficult to identify any of the Aglianico typicity because of all that oak spice. On the close, the wine is overtly chocolaty (in a heavy and cloying manner). Some 20,000 bottles were made.

You don’t notice the sumptuous blackberries and elderberries at first, because they’re hiding behind an array of lightly toasted herbs and spices. The full-bodied palate is also more held-back than you might expect, as firm, steely tannins and meandering acidity cut a sleek form. Even so, this is a bold, impressive wine, all the better for its lack of overindulgence. Drink from 2023.
