Vineyard planted in 2002 in old, rocky, volcanic soils to Syrah clone 877, with three rows of Viognier. 92% Syrah and 8% Viognier co-fermented. 75% destemmed whole berries with 25% whole clusters. Ambient-yeast and malolactic fermentations. Aged sur lie with monthly bâtonnage and rested 25 months in 100% new French barrels. Deep ruby with a hint of garnet. Bloody, meaty and ferrous with ripe blackberry, leather and black pepper. High, fresh acidity. Weighty and rustic. This screams Syrah. Incredible length and still so young. Fabulous. (SCJ)

The 2016 Syrah Rodgers Creek Vineyard is peaking today. Spice, worn-in leather, tobacco, incense, chocolate, cracked black pepper and dried herbs all show the added layers of nuance of a wine that has been in bottle for a few years. Readers who enjoy cool-climate Syrah with bottle age will find much to admire. The 2016 is a serious wine for the dinner table. I would give it a good bit of air.
The 2016 Syrah Rodgers Creek Vineyard has classic Rhône-inspired markers of savory cured meats, black pepper, lavender, and black plum. It displays richness without weight and has fine structure throughout. Drink 2022-2035.
The 2016 Syrah Rodger's Creek Vineyard incorporates 8% Viognier and was matured for two years in barrel. Medium ruby-purple in color, it has generous aromas of red and black cherries and blueberries with accents of milk chocolate, allspice and garrigue. The palate is full-bodied, fresh and chalky with a concentrated core of ripe fruit and a long, spicy finish. 440 cases were made.
