Punteggio 91+/100 · Da bere 2020-2040, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jul 2016

Brovia's 2005 Barolo Ca' Mia is one of the most massively tannic, forbidding 2005s I tasted for this article. Will the 2005 ever open up? I am not sure. Based on this tasting, it looks like the 2005 has put on significant weight since it was bottled a few years ago. The aromatics are beguiling but otherwise, the 2005 is in no mood to show anything at this stage. Readers will have to be exceedingly patient. Based on all the other wines in the lineup, I think there is a fair chance the Ca' Mia will one day be more expressive, but today it is shut down hard.

Deep red with ruby highlights. Black fruits, iron, violet, menthol and smoked meat on the nose. Juicy, spicy and ripe, with explosive inner-mouth perfume and superb intensity to the slightly medicinal black fruit flavors. Really classic Serralunga Barolo: not obviously sweet and not at all easy in the early going but with a powerful structure for a long and slow evolution in bottle. Extremely long on the aftertaste, with the firm tannins covered by the wine's sheer stuffing.

The 2005 Barolo Ca' Mia is the richest of these 2005 Barolos, even though it retains a very classic, mid-weight feel. Dark plums, prunes cherries, smoke, leather, menthol and licorice emerge from this masculine Barolo. The Ca' Mia will require patience, but it remains highly promising at this stage.

The 2005 Barolo Ca’ Mia is the richest of these 2005 Barolos, even though it retains a very classic, mid-weight feel. Dark plums, prunes, cherries, smoke, leather, menthol and licorice emerge from this masculine Barolo. The Ca’ Mia will require patience, but it remains highly promising at this stage. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025. This is a wonderful set of new releases from the Brovia family. The 2005 Barolos are very much in the style of the vintage and show tons of balance and sheer harmony. The Barolos are vinified in a traditional manner, using natural yeasts and with a preference towards cement for the single-vineyard wines, which are subsequently aged in French oak. The entry-level Barolo is made from the estate’s youngest vines and aged in large Slavonian oak. Importer: Rosenthal Wine Merchants, Pine Plains, NY; tel. (800) 910-1990
