Deep brown in color, the 1989 Hill of Grace has an appealing nose of dried cherries, fruit cake and cloves with underlying dried lavender, thyme and salami hints. Medium-bodied with tons of savory and dried berry flavor layers, it has bright acidity, a medium level of rounded tannins and a long finish with a herbal lift. It is mature. Medium intense ruby with some evolution. Low-key nose. Sweet and salty and bloody. Reminds me a bit of a right-bank bordeaux! Not elegant but a very valid, attention-grabbing youthful style. A bit dry on the end. A bit of a bruiser still! Slightly coarse tannins. (JR)
Much more evolved on the nose than the 1990. Rich and mellow. Definite sweetness and power – even a hint of syrupiness. Tannins long since gone to reveal an opulent, flattering rather than very fine or elegant wine. (JR)
