Raw, meaty and downright gamey, the 1999 Thierry Allemand Cornas Chaillot is a thrilling Syrah that, along with a deep purple/blood color, offers up meaty black olive, charcoal, dried meats (think saucisson or dried, fatty sausage) and game aromatics. It was every bit as complex, intense and nuanced on the second day as it was on the first. The palate is medium to full bodied with concentrated fruit, fresh acidity and a clean, pure texture that carries into the long finish. While this still shows relatively young fruit and is drinking at point for me, I see no reason this won’t continue to evolve well over the next 10+ years. Where can I find some ’99 Reynard?

Thierry Allemand

Allemand’s wines set the benchmark for Cornas: expressive Syrahs crafted with uncompromising traditional methods and released in tiny quantities. From the 1980s, he revived abandoned vineyards on Cornas’s steep granite slopes, building his domaine without inherited land or financial support.
