Punteggio 96/100 · Da bere 2019-2060, Mark Squires, Dec 2019

The 1940 Single Harvest Tawny Port (i.e., a Colheita) comes in with 170 grams of residual sugar. It was bottled with a bar-top cork in 2019. Simply stunning, this elegant beauty opens with unctuous texture before revealing the anticipated complexity. It seems rather fresh for its age. It also seems richer than it is, but it is never thick or ponderous. Actually, depth is not its biggest calling card. However, it's very bright and lively. Its sunny demeanor leads to a juicy finish. It just bursts onto the palate and makes you drool a little. Needless to say, it's remarkably delicious. There's the expected caramel with a touch of fig and molasses. This looks like a big winner, something that is all too easy to drink. In terms of aging it, of course, it is ready to drink on release. It will hold indefinitely, barring cork failures. The end-date drinking window is just a placeholder. Finally, this will drink better around 58 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit than room temperature. Don't drink it too warm.
